About the Work
Mathis purposefully merges classic and digital techniques, deliberately breaking their boundaries and allowing them to engage in an artistic dialogue.
Working through various mediums, mainly planographic monotypes, digital photography, and digital paintings, Mathis explores the complexity, beauty, contradictions and vividness of the world and human life in it. He is fascinated by the spontaneity and texture inherent in hand-pulled monotype printing, capturing ephemeral moments with a unique tactile quality which he contrasts with a purposeful, controlled approach in photography and his paintings. Obsessed with paper, the paper medium on which his works are delivered are considered an integral part of the oeuvre.
His themes often delve into solitude and vastness, capturing quiet, expansive and sometimes lonely moments that depict stillness and space and offer a sense of peace and reflection. At the same time, Mathis‘ artwork examines the breadth of human experience and the vibrant colorfulness of life. Utilizing vivid colors and intricate patterns his works aim at depicting the diversity and richness that defines our existence.
